Cheddar Onion Soda Bread

I make this every year with our St Patrick s Day dinner!


  1. 4 cup flour
  2. 1 1/2 tsp salt
  3. 1 tbsp baking soda
  4. 6 tbsp butter softened
  5. 1 1/4 buttermilk
  6. 2 tbsp confectioners sugar
  7. 3/4 cup finely chopped onion
  8. 3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese


  1. Preheat oven to 425 Spray baking sheet with Pam Spray
  2. In a large mixing bowl whisk together bread flour salt and baking powder until thoroughly combined Beat in the butter buttermilk and confectioners sugar to make a dough
  3. Gently fold in the onion and Cheddar cheese
  4. Divide dough in half and shape each half into a ball Place the loaves onto the prepared baking sheet and gently flatten to about 2 inches thick Dust each loaf with flour
  5. Change Bake on a preheated oven until browned about 30 minutes Cool on racks for a few minutes serve warm
