H's South African Bobotie

this is a favourite south African dish. really delish with rice and pompadoms


  1. Bobotie mixture
  2. 500 grams lamb mince
  3. 2 onions chopped
  4. 60 ml butter
  5. 1 sliced bread
  6. 125 ml beef stock
  7. 15 ml garlic and ginger paste
  8. 15 ml apricot jam
  9. 2 clove garlic crushed
  10. 1 small apple grated
  11. 15 ml curry powder
  12. 5 ml mixed herbs
  13. 5 ml tumeric
  14. 15 ml fresh lemon juice
  15. 125 ml chopped dried apricots and raisins
  16. 1 salt and pepper
  17. Topping
  18. 250 ml sour cream
  19. 2 eggs
  20. 6 bay leaves


  1. preheat the oven to 180°F Celsius
  2. in a frying pan on top of the stove brown the mince well in a little oil breaking it up with the back of a fork as it is Browning
  3. remove and set aside
  4. Saute the onion in butter until glassy remove from heat and return the meat
  5. remove crust from bread and soak in stock work the bread into mince mixture ensuring that there are no lumps of bread
  6. add the rest of the ingredients in main list and mix well to taste transfer mince mixture to a casserole dish
  7. mix all topping ingredients except the bay leaves and pour over meat
  8. push bay leaves into mixture
  9. bake uncovered for 30 to 40 minutes or until topping is brown and set
