Sayur Kacang Merah (Kidney Beans Soup)

This is traditional Sundanese (people of West Java region) dish. One of my comfort foods. It takes some time to prepare it, but it s worth it. My family loves this recipe. If you are using dried kidney beans, make sure to soak them in water overnight, then boil them 10 minutes. Discard the water and you can use the kidney beans in your dishes. Simmer for at least 30 minutes. I use fresh kidney beans, so as long as you boil and then simmer them for 30 minutes or so, it should be OK.

  1. 250 gr fresh kidney beans soak for 10 minutes and remove the dirt and the water
  2. 250 gr cubed roll steak diced
  3. 3 cm lesser galangal bruised
  4. 1 tbsp tamarind (or 1 1/2 tsp powdered tamarind)
  5. 4 tbsp palm sugar
  6. 1 tsp salt
  7. 1 liter water

  1. Boil the water with the beans Lower the heat and simmer throughout the process
  2. Add the cubed roll steak and other ingredients except salt
  3. Stir from time to time
  4. When the beef is tender (use a fork to pierce it) add the salt Usually it takes about 30 – 45 minutes
  5. Adjust the taste when necessary
